The Ugly Truth...

was ugly. I had hopes it would be halfway decent, but I was sorely mistaken. Bad acting and obvious "jokes" made for bad movie. If you want to see a Romantic Comedy in the theater, I recommend The Proposal over this one.

Summer Movies 2009

Yes. Summer movies are coming!

There's not much more fun to be had than sitting in the dark theater watching some mindless popcorn flick while munching on your smuggled bag of Sour Patch Kids, right?

Tomorrow night, the Matthew and I are going to see the new Star Trek flick. I'm apprehensive but optimistic. Reviews have been good; fanboys have been outraged. I'm no traditionalist, but wonder how I'll receive the film.

I have to get me a list of the upcoming flicks for the summer season. Once I do, I'm posting it with a "will see"/"wait for video"/"wait for TV" rating for each one. "Will see" flicks will get a linky to the trailer.

More than that, I cannot say.

Wanted

If you haven't seen it yet, you should go. Seriously. It reminded me a little bit like Fight Club in certain ways (especially when he mentioned IKEA), but it's not. Although, I will warn you, if you wanted a bunch of assassins walking the streets of whatever town the flick took place in, it's not that either. Go see it!!!

Summer Movie Extravaganza!

OK, so this summer, unlike last summer, actually has a slate of "popcorn movies" that I actually WANT to see.

This is exciting, considering the fact that it almost NEVER happens.

So, I've already seen Iron Man, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian ... and loved every minute of them. For "popcorn movies," they're incredibly well-acted and, even where the script is lacking, they're not butt-numbingly lame.

Coming up later this summer are Wanted, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, WALL*E and Mamma Mia!

Am I crazy to want to see them????

I don't think I am. They look genuinely good. So does the American Girl movie about Kit. (I would feel super-creepy to go see it without a small child in tow, though. Where can I rent one???)

Of course, there are some real dogs in the slate as well, judging from the previews...like You Don't Mess With the Zohan (an unredeemingly silly-looking Adam Sandler comedy ... which I might catch when it makes its way to cable) or The Happening (the latest from M. Night Shyamalan ... the trailers make it look like a steaming pile of dog crap ... and this is coming from someone who enjoyed three of his other films; I think he's better than this) or Beverly Hills Chihuahua (no offense to anyone who loves the creepy little things, but I feel that chihuahas have less appeal than rats.)

Ewww. I get the creepy-crawlies (and the heebie-jeebies) from movies like those.

Ok, I'm a dork

But, I can't NOT watch an Alien movie no matter how lame the premise is. It's probably the only real "gore" movie series I like for the sake of gore. Case in point, Alien Vs Predator - Requiem. Not a high class movie, and not the finest acting, but definitely a hit on the gore factor. If you want a cheap (and I do mean cheap) scare, check it out. You may be disappointed, but you'll also be disgusted.

I Am Right

I love A.O. Scott.

His frank and breezy reviews have been a great way to offset the syrupy and overloaded reviews of a lot of other critics.

Today (Friday, 1/11/2008) he's got an essay in the "Movies" section.

Read it: Take the Kids, and Don't Feel Guilty

I agree.
